Star For Life Mobile Clinic making impact in Schools

Star For Life has now introduced the Mobile Health Project under HIV and AIDS Prevention Programme. The launch of the Mobile Clinic is a responsive approach to the ground work laid by SFL coaches in the past 3 years of the Schools Project. The mobile clinic project is to enable young people to know their health status and properly plan for future. The project is responding to a direct call by National Government and Ministry of Health to encourage all citizens to do HIV Counselling & Testing (HCT) better known as VCT (Voluntary Counselling & Testing), so as to curb new incidents of HIV infections and promote healthy life styles.

At Sicelosthu High school in Ingwavuma area, the principal expressed his confidence on this project and was very thrilled by the level of professionalism displayed during the mobile clinic visit to his school. “I find the environment naturally welcoming as we have been prepared for this through workshops and people here are like our family members however they are professional”.

Scebile Nsele the Health Coach (who's a Professional Nurse) was thrilled to see a good turn-out of learners mixed as boys and girls taking this opportunity with enthusiasm. One participant a grade 10 male learner has remarked to the Counsellor on site that it would be better if the clinic could come on monthly basis since their out of school brothers and sisters are interested in using this facility, too.

How it works?
The Health Coach and HIV Counselor organize with the school management to visit schools and do health education in group sessions; then they will do the actual testing using rapid testing kits. The relationship that exist between local health centers make it possible to do referrals for on-going counseling and support as well as doing the CD4 count test.

Learners have expressed their excitement in many ways, “I am glad I have used this opportunity and took responsibility about my sexual choices” says a grade 12 learner at Makhasa high school in Hluhluwe, KZN.
The mobile clinic project is a response to the need on the ground as Siphile Mdaka, (SFL Director) put it “after careful consideration regarding the number of cases our Life Skills coaches were handling in schools, we then saw a need to bring this resource close to the where young people are...in schools”.
The project has been made possible through Volvo Trucks and Pfizer partnership with Star For Life to change the life of young people.

News from Sri Lanka

Dear reader, 2010-02-22

My name is Cecilia Riddeback, 24 years old and living in Stockholm, Sweden. In the Spring year 2009 I was granted a scholarship, from my University Ersta Skondal, called “Minor field studies” (MFS). The MFS scholarship is issued by the International Programme Office and financed by the Swedish organization Sida for smaller field studies in developing countries all over the world.
I had decided that I wanted to carry out both my essay on bachelor level and master level in terms of an evaluating project of the “Star for Life program” in the town Matara, Sri Lanka. The plan is to look further into how the “Star for Life program” in Sri Lanka functions and what kind of impact it has on the children and adolescents in order to compare it to the “Star for Life program” in South Africa. These two countries are in two different continents with differences in cultural context, however with the same Star for Life program. So I find it to be an interesting task to investigate how the “Star for Life concept” works in a world wide perspective.
If you want to share my experiences during my eight weeks here in Matara, Sri Lanka you are more than welcome to read my articles. I will try to keep you updated once a week.

I have now been in the capital Colombo in Sri Lanka for four days. I arrived last Sunday afternoon to this very tropical country. The temperature is around 34 degrees Celsius. When I left Sweden it was a lot of snow on the ground and the temperature was around 24 degrees cold. It was a dramatic change of 58 degrees just a plan trip away.
Sri Lanka is a warm and sunny country, with kind and honest people. Everyone here have taken good care of me and given me a warm welcome. So it has been easy for me to adjust to the new climate and time zone. Just have to remember to drink plenty of water!

My first days here I dedicated to find a gym where I can exercise and fill my mind with harmony and peace (to be honest with you I am an exercising maniac).
I also find it easier to concentrate and write when I have run the treadmill.

Tomorrow morning I am leaving Colombo for Matara. It will take me about four hours with car to drive down there.

I am really excited and looking forward to meet the people of the “Star for Life program” in Matara.

Star for Life Gala

My name is Emmy Ståhl and I am entering the last year at Lund’s dance and musical gymnasium. As a final project work I wanted to do something else in order to help other people in the world. As I heard of Star for Life I decided to put up a charity event named the Star for Life gala in order to raise funds for the organization. The event was amazing and I was able to raise 5597 SEK.


Star for Life would like to express gratitude to Emmy for her valuable contribution in order to support young people to live an Aids-free life and to fulfill their dreams.

The SFL began 2010 roll out on ‘high spirit’

Workshops

The Star for Life schools program began last week with workshops. Across KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa and Windhoek, Namibia similar workshops are now taking place and all our coaches and trainers are working tirelessly to make sure that all the schools are receiving the support that they need.

These workshops are aimed at inspiring the learners and teachers, and to encourage the learner to live an AIDS FREE life.

At Qhakaza High School in Empangeni in KwaZulu Natal, a comprehensive set of learners’ and teachers’ workshops took place in the school over three days. The most senior learners enrolled in the programme at this particular school had reached their third workshop (Grade 9-10), but there were also workshops for new learners and for teachers.

The workshop for the senior learners focused on their personal goals, their plans, and to be disciplined in the pursuit of their dreams. “Workshop 3 brings hope and determination to the learners so that they can fulfil their dreams despite the challenges many learners face in life. Hope and dreams become essential in anything they do”, says Jean-Daniel Kabati, Senior Trainer at Star for Life.

Pictured below are newly enrolled learners of Grade 8 at Qhakaza High School, attending their very first workshop. The learners were inspired to have dreams about the future; they wrote them down in their Dream Book and shared them with their friends.

The coach also emphasised the importance of education and how an unhealthy lifestyle might hinder their efforts to fulfil their dreams.
Jean-Daniel says that Workshop 1 is ”very important for learners because it tells them – it makes them see – that they are still important and that they can be whatever they want to be in life, irrespective of the challenges they face every day.”

The workshop continued by focusing on HIV/AIDS and spoke of the importance of values, self-esteem, and making the right choices. Though running for several hours, the students listened keenly throughout the entire workshop and absorbed as much as they possibly could.

Precious Dlamini, the coach of the school, describes the impact of the workshops: “Our kids are in high school, and some never get to speak about their dreams, however Star for Life provides that platform. For them to have dreams, against a backdrop of a whole lot of challenges, gives them a sense of direction and gives hope to a whole new generation.”

Through these workshops, learners are empowered to make the right decisions while teachers are encouraged to contribute with support and guidance. Indeed, the intense energy harnessed in the workshops constitutes a very powerful instrument for influencing the mind-set of students and teachers alike.

We embrace the coming year with great confidence.

Dear all,

2009 is almost at and end and I would like to take the opportunity to thank all our employees and friends around the world. Our organisation continues to evolve and we passed a number of mile-stones during the past year. In May, Star for Life signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the government in KwaZulu-Natal. This cooperation underlines the strong position of Star for Life in the region. With the MoU as a base, we hope that we can seek further funding for a broader expansion. The office in Sweden has made efforts to further increase the knowledge of Star for Life. The year 2009 was also the year when we expanded to a third country, Sri Lanka. In Sweden, two concert tours was arranged, starring the Star Choir and Triple & Touch. Moreover, we reached a public breakthrough when Malmö FF, a Swedish football club, decided to put Star for Life on their shirts. We can already see that a number of large actors are in the process of establishing a relationship with Star for Life during 2010 and we hope that this will give us even more publicity in Sweden. Thus, we embrace the coming year with great confidence.

Star for Life and the World AIDS Day!

Star for Life gathered about 30 people in the wintery darkness of Stockholm to highlight the World AIDS Day.

It was an evening to show solidarity with the 33 million people living with the disease today, of which over two-thirds are residing in Sub-Saharan Africa. The evening offered a preview of a new documentary about Nelson Mandela, made by award winning filmmaker Simon Stanford. The parts shown were fantastic and it is not difficult to understand why the BBC recently bought the documentary. In addition, Dr Per Strand (University of Cape Town) held a presentation regarding preliminary findings of a recent external report which has focused on Star for Life’s methods.

Young Enterprise Company donate to Star for Life

A belated ‘thank you’ to Young Enterprise company LRRW (Life, Responsibility, Reality, the World) who donated half their profit to Star for Life. During their last year at school the girls, all from Höganäsgymnasiet, ran a company producing and selling T-shirts and bags in an eye-catching design. All four knew that they wanted to donate some of the money to a good cause and after lots of consideration they decided on Star for Life.

‘We heard about Star for Life from some friends and then, when we started reading about the work they do, we knew that this was what we wanted to donate our money to,’ they told Partner Schools Coordinator Lois Petersson when she visited the school to award them with a certificate for their efforts.

This sort of generosity is what helps us to make a difference for young people in southern Africa. Thanks again girls and best of luck in the future!

Volvo is taking the dreams for learners in Durban high schools into reality

Volvo has in partnership with Star for Life launched an apprenticeship in which learners will be recruited in diesel-mechanics, auto-electrical and other opportunities within the Volvo Company. The first learners will be enrolled in the beginning of 2010.

‘It’s important for companies to contribute to the future of young people and to assist them with necessary skills for their own future and the future of the country. Volvo, through the Star for Life Programme and the apprenticeship programme, is exactly doing that’ says Mr. Mthethwa principal of Zuzumqhele high school.

A total of 24 learners have been invited from 8 schools involved in the Star for Life Programme in the Durban area, and they will undergo a process of selection and those who qualify will be placed at a further education college (technical college). They will then enroll in the field of their interest within diesel mechanics, auto electrical and other fields associated with Volvo and then they will be recruited within the Volvo family for the apprenticeship programme.

Volvo AB and Volvo South Africa is supporting the Star for Life Programme in 8 schools in the Durban area. The programme has reached about 6000 learners and about 210 teachers since its inception in February 2007. It has in addition contributed in strengthening the self-esteem and improving the academic records of many learners in the 8 schools in Durban.

Fundraising week

The past week has seen some extraordinary events taking place throughout Sweden. Star for Life arranged a number of fundraising events with the purpose of supporting Nkosi Mandela in the construction of a high school and medical clinic in Mvezo, South Africa. Through auctions and the successful brick-by-brick concept, Star for Life has managed to raise a total of 2 162 500 SEK for the projects in Mvezo.

On 21 October, Star for Life had the honour of hosting a gala dinner at the Grand Hôtel in Stockholm, the first event of the week. The evening offered great entertainment from the Star Choir and first-class food and drinks, in addition to interesting speeches and remarks from a number of speakers. The energy and enthusiasm of the Star Choir filled the dinner hall and ensured that no guest left without a part of South Africa in their hearts.


“To be part of taking the first steps in the building of a school in the village of Nelson Mandela, also known as ‘The Great Place’, is as touching as it is inspiring,” said Peter Janzon, Fundraising Manager, Star for Life. A celebrity auction was also held, generating a substantial amount of funds.

Dan Olofsson, Founder of Star for Life, and Nkosi Mandela, Chief of Mvezo, also participated in the European Development Days and met with a number of people, including HRH Victoria, Crown Princess of Sweden.

The fundraising week continued with a gala at Konserthuset, Stockholm, on Saturday 24 October. Artists included, among others, Mikael Wiehe, Cyndee Peters, Dogge Doggelito & GLS Fight Life, and Edo Bumba. It was a truly memorable evening where artists and audience came together to create a fantastic atmosphere.

The week concluded with a gala dinner at Glasklart in Malmö, Sweden on Monday 26 October, where it seemed like it would never cease to rain. Before the gala dinner took place at the restaurant of Glasklart, the guests braved the weather and went to visit the exhibition of Nelson Mandela, the grandfather of Nkosi, at Malmö museum.

At Glasklart, Touch of Africa starring Swedish Triple & Touch and South African Star Choir, entertained on the stage while the three hundred guests mingled and chatted at the dinner tables.

All of a sudden the lights went out. For two hours it was almost pitch black in the hall. However, despite the lack of power, the Star choir managed to make a deep impact on the audience. With candle lights in their hands, the lights twinkled like little stars as the choir swayed rhythmically with strong and clear voices. Surely, they left no heart untouched with their music.

The evening ended with a successful auction raising a generous amount of funds for Mvezo. “I looked forward to the dinner in Malmö on 26th October. It is not everyday we can help to build a school in the village of Nelson Mandela,” said Sam Olofsson, Secretary General, Star for Life.

STRENGTHENING PARTNERSHIP

The recently signed Memorandum of Understanding between Star for Life and the Department of Health and Education in KwaZulu-Natal asserts our commitment to work closely with national government in countries where Star for Life is active.

”This is a breakthrough for Star for Life, enabling a wider implementation of the project in KwaZulu-Natal in order to contribute in the battle against the HIV/AIDS epidemic”, say Christin and Dan Olofsson, founders of Star for Life.

This cooperation between Star for Life and the provincial government in KwaZulu-Natal ensures the sustainability of the project and affirms the success of the programme so far. We recognise the importance of positive relations with regional and national governments and this partnership is a significant step forward and will benefit the work of Star for Life in South Africa.

Procivitas PC-mission

Procivitas Privata Gymnasium has recently made a commitment to the Star for Life Programme. As result of this decision the school has established a scholarship to be awarded to students with ideas,dreams and ambitions connected to the programme.

This year it is Beatriz Montero and Christoffer Carlsson from Procivitas in Malmö who have received a scholarship for their idea – to donate used Procivitas laptops to a Star for Life school and then go down there, install them and, finally, hold a computer course for staff and students. They have called the project Procivitas PC-mission and are now appealing to companies in the Öresunds Region to donate laptops so that even more young South Africans can learn IT skills.

Update from the Star Choir on tour

The Touch of Africa tour is now in full swing and the Star Choir with Triple & Touch has already performed at six locations in Sweden. The intense schedule will take them all around Sweden and will finish with a grand concert at Konserthuset (Concert Hall) in Stockholm on 24 October. The audience has been absolutely fantastic and the energy of the choir has been a shining star in the cold Swedish autumn. TOUCH OF AFRICA (SWEDISH)

Den populära och välkända gruppen Star Choir är tillbaka i Sverige. Tillsammans med Triple & Touch ska de denna gång besöka 25 svenska städer under sin turné och uppträda mer än 30 gånger mellan den 22 september och 27 oktober. Oavsett vart kören framträder har den svenska publiken känt värme och upplevt den enorma musikaliteten bland de unga sydafrikanerna. Recensenterna har blivit förundrade av den enormt talangfulla kören i åldrarna 16-20.

”Det är härligt att vara tillbaka i Sverige eftersom människorna är så trevliga här, men även för den viktiga uppgiften för turnén – att samla in pengar för Star for Lifes hiv och aidsprogram i Sydafrika och Namibia” säger Thankiwe Mabuza från the Star Choir.

Kören kommer även att uppträda under de europeiska utvecklingsdagarna i Stockholm, 22-24 oktober. Dessutom kommer kören att göra två konserter i Stockholm och Malmö till förmån för Nelson Mandelas barnbarn, Mr. Zwelivelile M.D Mandela. Syftet är att samla in pengar som skall användas för att främja projekt som Nelson Mandela valt ut i sin födelseplats i östra Kapprovinsen i Sydafrika. Kören kommer under vistelsen fortsätta att stödja och främja kulturella utbyten med svenska körer och skolor, för att sprida information om Star for Life, men också för att det musikaliska mötet är viktigt för körer i båda länder.

“Det är fantastiskt att ha möjligheten att få uppleva dessa ungdomar från Sydafrika. Musiken är kanske den mest positiva bäraren av budskapet att människor från olika delar av världen är lika och att vi alla delar samma drömmar” säger Göran Rudbo från Triple & Touch.

Star for Life, som grundades år 2005, når idag ut till 62.000 elever och bedrivs på 62 skolor i Sydafrika, Namibia och Sri Lanka. TOUCH OF AFRICA

The well-known and popular Star Choir is back in Sweden. They are together with Triple & Touch, on this occasion going to tour 25 Swedish cities and perform more than 30 concerts between the 22nd of September and 27th of October. Wherever the choir has performed the Swedish audience has felt the great warmth and tremendous musicality of the young South African choir. The reviewers have been overwhelmed by the talent of the choir who are between the ages of 16 - 20.

‘’It is really nice to be back to Sweden because people are very friendly, but also for the reason of the importance of the tour in order to raise funds for Star for Life HIV/AIDS activities in South Africa and Namibia’’ says Thankiwe Mabuza from the Star Choir.

The Star Choir will in addition perform during the European Development days in Stockholm, 22-24 October. In addition, the Choir will perform two concerts in Stockholm and Malmö in the honor of a reception for the Grandson of Nelson Mandela, Mr. Zwelivelile M.D. Mandela. The purpose is to raise funds to support projects prioritized by Nelson Mandela at his birthplace in Easter Cape, South Africa. The choir will during the visit as well continue to promote cultural exchange meetings with Swedish choirs and schools in Sweden, to spread the information about Star for Life, but also because the musical meeting is important.

‘’It is always wonderful to have the possibility to experience these youngsters from Southern Africa. The music is maybe the most positive carrier, when it is about to get people from different parts of the world to feel, that actually we are all the same and have the similar dreams’’ says Göran Rudbo from Triple & Touch.

The Star for Life, which started in 2005, covers 62.000 learners today and is run at 63 schools in South Africa, Namibia and Sri Lanka. The Star for Life programme inspires learners to strengthen their self-esteem, make their dreams come true and live an AIDS-free life. The programme is part of the daily education at the schools. The Star for Life programme is an NGO and has no political or religious affiliation.

A 90-account on the Star for Life paying-in slips makes a difference

Not all organisations that class themselves as “non-profit-organisations” or “charities” live up to the promises they give to donors. Star for Life is however not one of those. That is now demonstrated by the accreditation from the Swedish Foundation for Fundraising Control, SFI. It means that Star for Life is under SFI's supervision and ensures donors that at least 75 % of the money raised goes straight to the ones who need it. (The rest of it goes to administrative duties within the organisation.) You will note the change on the paying-in slips when you donate money to Star for Life: the account number (plusgiro 90 01 61-1) starts with 90. Hence the designation “90-account”.
